Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a short-term, trauma-focused therapy designed to help individuals who have experienced multiple traumatic events—often in the context of ongoing violence, war, or displacement. Rooted in cognitive-behavioral principles, NET helps people process these events by encouraging them to create a coherent narrative of their life, integrating both traumatic and positive experiences.
During therapy, the individual tells their life story chronologically, with particular attention to emotionally intense moments. This process not only helps organize memories but also enables the brain to reprocess traumatic experiences, reducing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Originally developed for survivors of war and torture, NET has since been adapted for a wide range of populations affected by trauma.
